How to Find a Psychologist in Elsternwick: A Local Guide

4 min read

Finding the right psychologist can feel like one more thing on an already full plate. If you live in Elsternwick or the surrounding suburbs of Caulfield, Ripponlea, Brighton, St Kilda East or Glen Huntly, this guide walks you through how to choose a psychologist, how Medicare rebates work, and what to expect from your first appointment, so you can take the first step with a bit more confidence.

Why see a psychologist in Elsternwick rather than travelling into the city?

Therapy works best when it's easy to keep turning up. A psychologist close to home or work means less time commuting, fewer cancelled sessions and a calmer start to each appointment. Life's Good Psychology is at 57 Orrong Road, Elsternwick, a few minutes from Elsternwick station and the Glen Huntly Road shops, and we also offer telehealth sessions if you'd rather talk from home.

What can a psychologist help with?

People come to us for all sorts of reasons. Some have a clear diagnosis; many simply know that something isn't right. Common reasons Elsternwick locals reach out include:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks and phobias

  • Low mood and depression

  • Stress at work, burnout and adjustment to big life changes

  • Relationship difficulties and family conflict

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Post-natal depression and the adjustment to parenthood

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Difficulty managing emotions or behaviour

If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing "counts", it does. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from talking to someone.

How to choose the right psychologist for you

There's no single "best" psychologist. There's the one who is right for you. A few things worth checking:

Registration and membership

In Australia, psychologists must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia (Ahpra). Membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) is a further sign of professional standards. Our principal psychologist, Chaya Liberow, is Ahpra-registered and an APS member.

Their approach

Ask what kind of therapy they use. Chaya works within a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework, drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), solution-focused therapy and schema therapy depending on what suits you. Evidence-based doesn't have to mean rigid. The approach should fit your goals.

Fit and feel

The relationship between you and your psychologist is one of the strongest predictors of how well therapy works. It's completely reasonable to book one session, see how it feels, and decide from there.

Practicalities

Availability, location, telehealth options and cost all matter. Many practices have long waitlists; at Life's Good Psychology we currently have immediate availability, so you can usually be seen within the week.

Do I need a referral? Understanding Mental Health Care Plans

You can see a psychologist without a referral. Just book directly. If you'd like a Medicare rebate, though, you'll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (often called a Mental Health Care Plan) from your GP. Here's how it works:

  1. Book a longer appointment with your GP and let them know it's for a mental health plan.

  2. Your GP will assess you, write the plan and provide a referral to a psychologist (you can ask for Life's Good Psychology by name).

  3. Bring or email the referral to us before your first session.

  4. Medicare currently allows rebates on up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year under this plan, with a review by your GP after the first six.

Any GP clinic in Elsternwick, Caulfield or Brighton can prepare a plan. You don't need to see a specific doctor.

What does it cost?

At the time of writing, a standard 50-minute consultation at Life's Good Psychology is $220. With a Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare returns roughly $89 per session, bringing the out-of-pocket cost to around $131. Current figures are always listed on our Fees and Rebates page. If cost is a genuine barrier, please talk to us. Reduced-fee arrangements can be discussed for clients experiencing financial difficulty.

What to expect in your first session

The first appointment is mostly about getting to know you. Chaya will ask what's brought you in, what's been happening in your life, and what you'd like to be different. You'll talk through your history, current supports and goals, and together you'll sketch out a plan for the sessions ahead.

You don't need to prepare anything, but some people find it helpful to jot down a few notes beforehand: what's been hardest lately, what you've already tried, and what "better" would look like. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to.

Sessions run for 50 minutes and are available in person at our Orrong Road rooms or by telehealth (video or phone).

Telehealth: therapy from home in Elsternwick and beyond

Telehealth has become a normal part of psychological care and, for many people, works just as well as face-to-face sessions. It's ideal if you're juggling work and kids, find travel difficult, or simply feel more comfortable in your own space. Medicare rebates apply to telehealth sessions under a Mental Health Care Plan in the same way as in-person appointments.
